A slug is part of a permanent address. Change it after publishing and every existing link breaks unless you set up a redirect at the same time — which is a thing people remember to do about half the time. Spend the extra thirty seconds now.
What makes a good one
Three to five meaningful words. A slug that repeats the entire headline adds length without adding clarity, and long URLs get truncated in the places they are most likely to be seen.
Drop filler words where they carry nothing, but not where removing them makes the phrase read oddly. how-to-scope-a-project reads better than how-scope-project, and the two extra words cost nothing.
Dates
Leave them out. A date in the URL makes an article look stale two years later even when the content is still accurate, and it gives the reader nothing they cannot see on the page.
Keywords in URLs
They help a little, and less than most guides suggest. The larger benefit is that a readable URL is more likely to be clicked when it is pasted into a message with no other context, and easier to recognise in a list of search results.
Non-Latin titles
Worth knowing: accented and non-Latin characters are stripped here rather than transliterated. A title in Urdu or Arabic will not produce a usable slug — write those by hand in transliterated form, or let WordPress generate one and check it before publishing.
Spaces and underscores both become hyphens, because hyphens are what search engines treat as word separators.
