Placeholder text exists to protect a layout review from turning into a copy review.
Put a draft headline into a mockup and the meeting becomes an argument about wording. Put Latin-looking nonsense there and attention stays on spacing, hierarchy and rhythm, which is what you called the meeting for.
Where it misleads you
Latin words are longer than English ones on average. A layout that fits perfectly in lorem ipsum can overflow the moment real copy arrives — and German or Arabic will change the picture again, sometimes dramatically.
So for early wireframes, placeholder is the right call. For a final design review, use real content, or at least content of realistic length. Tight layouts signed off on lorem ipsum are a recurring source of surprises.
The other trap
It reaches production more often than anyone admits — a footer nobody scrolled to, a secondary tab, an empty state. Search your site for the word before launch. It tells search engines nothing and it tells a visitor the site is unfinished.
Alternatives
Placeholder text in plain English avoids the awkward client question about why the site is in Latin. The trade-off is that readable placeholder pulls attention back to the words, which is the thing you were avoiding.
Where it came from
A passage of Cicero, garbled during typesetting centuries ago. The garbling is the useful part: it retains the word shapes and letter distribution of real Latin prose, so it looks like text at a glance, rather than the obvious repetition of random letters.
