The most common waste on a website is serving an image several times larger than it displays.
A photograph shown in a 600 pixel column does not need to be 4000 pixels wide. The browser scales it down and it looks identical — the visitor simply paid for every one of those extra pixels in load time, and on mobile data they paid in a way they notice.
A workable rule: size an image at roughly twice its display width. That covers high-density screens without going further, because beyond 2x the difference is invisible and the cost is not.
Sizes that cover most cases
Around 1920 wide for a full-width hero. 1200 for an image inside a text column. Thumbnails at twice their display size. Then let responsive markup serve smaller versions to phones rather than sending everyone the desktop file.
Downscaling is safe, upscaling is not
Reducing dimensions discards detail you could not see at the smaller size anyway. Enlarging cannot invent detail that was never captured, so a small image blown up looks soft however it is done — no tool fixes this, including the ones that claim to.
Work from the original
Re-saving a JPEG recompresses it, and the losses accumulate. Resize from the source file rather than from a copy you already resized last month.
What you save
Halving both dimensions removes about three quarters of the pixels, and the file shrinks accordingly. It is the single largest performance win available on most content sites, and it takes less effort than almost anything else on the list.
