⬦Favicon Generator
Generate a favicon from a letter or emoji and download it as a PNG.
A favicon is rendered smaller than almost anything else you will design, and that constraint decides everything.
A detailed logo becomes a smudge in a browser tab. This is why so many well-known companies use a single letter or a heavily simplified mark rather than their full identity — not because they lack a logo, but because the logo does not survive 16 pixels.
Strong contrast between the character and the background matters more than anything else here. Thin strokes disappear entirely at small sizes, so a bold letterform survives where an elegant one does not.
Sizes worth producing
32 by 32 for the browser tab. 180 by 180 for the Apple touch icon. 192 and 512 for a web app manifest. Beyond that you are covering edge cases that almost never come up.
Modern browsers accept PNG, so the old ICO format is rarely necessary any more.
Why your favicon has not updated
Browsers cache favicons more aggressively than almost any other asset, and a normal hard refresh often does not clear them. Load the icon file directly by URL, or check in a private window — the file is usually correct and you are looking at a cached copy.
Do you need one
Yes, and browsers request it whether you provide it or not. Without one you get a blank placeholder in the tab and a 404 in your server logs on effectively every page load — a small thing that quietly signals an unfinished site.
Generation happens locally with canvas. Nothing is uploaded.
